🎬The Story Behind|Kanosuke Distillery – A Legacy Distilled by Heart and Sea
The Call of Legacy & the Sea
From the moment he tasted his first sip, fourth-generation master blender Yoshitsugu Komasa knew he had found his calling. Raised amid the oak-imbued aromas of Kagoshima’s revered shōchū, he carried his family’s legacy into uncharted territory: the world of whisky. Inspired by distant barley fields and the salty sea breeze that defined his coastal home, he asked himself, “Can I craft a whisky as soulful as our shōchū—something born from our land, our history, our heart?”
Scene 1: Carrying a Grandfather’s Dream
In 1957, Yoshitsugu’s grandfather, Kanosuke Komasa, reinvented shōchū by aging it in oak barrels—a bold move that reshaped Japanese spirits. That same spirit of innovation lay dormant within the family for decades. When Yoshitsugu trained abroad in Scotland and America, he carried more than ambition—he carried a mission: to honor his grandfather’s trailblazing courage. The distillery he built would not just be his own name—it would be his name—etched in history.
Scene 2: Shochu Roots, Whisky Resolve
Returning home in 2017, Yoshitsugu stood on his grandfather’s land by Fukiagehama Beach—where Kanosuke dreamt of a distillery decades earlier. Powering forward, he leaned on his shōchū pedigree: fermentation techniques, vacuum distillation, oak aging knowledge, and artisanal patience. He passed these lessons into Kanosuke Distillery. Every step—from mash to maturation—was infused with a family’s determination to create something pure and never flashy.
Scene 3: Heart in the Still House
Inside the still house breathe three unique pot stills, each capturing a different voice: floral, oily, bold. Yoshitsugu smiles, saying, “We’re not just distilling malt—we’re composing a story.” And composition it is: he blends spirit from each still, shaped by sea air, climate, and craft, producing whiskies that echo both his lineage and vision.
Scene 4: A Whisper of the Sea in Every Barrel
With the sea’s salty breath dancing through the warehouse, Kanosuke’s whisky ages quickly but carefully. Yoshitsugu smiles as he describes watching the whisky “breathe”—absorbing warmth, minerals, and seaside sunshine. He tastes it, nods thoughtfully, and says, “This is our land’s soul in liquid form.” It’s not just whisky—it’s homecoming in a glass.
Today, Kanosuke is not just a distillery—it is Yoshitsugu’s family story, his personal promise, and a communal expression of Kagoshima’s spirit. Visitors sit at the Mellow Bar at dusk, sipping his whiskies and sharing in that dream. They taste lineage, place, and heart.
It is here, in the convergence of land, legacy, and love, that Kanosuke Distillery found its voice—quiet, confident, and complete.
